ALPENA –The Alpena High girls basketball team got it done once again on Friday.

Alpena took on Traverse City West for the second time this season and secured another win. After beating the Titans in Traverse City, the home-court advantage only helped. The Wildcats played outstanding defense and knocked down several shots to finish the 43-24 victory.

This win was even more special for Emily Kalish and Marah Wisniewski as it was this year’s Senior Night.

“Both of our seniors stepped up tonight and had a really good game for us. Their presence at practice and during games is huge and they really bring a lot of energy to this team,” Alpena coach Laura Dubey said. “I’m super proud of how much work these two have put in over the season and I loved having them a part of this team,”

West started the game off well, especially on the defensive side of the floor. Ainslee Hewitt helped the Titans gain early momentum by scoring the first basket of the game.

Alpena’s offense mainly was unsuccessful during the first quarter. The Titans ran a press style of defense and even though the Wildcats seemed to beat it, Alpena struggled to score.

By the end of the first quarter, West had a narrow 8-7 lead.

The second quarter consisted of lots of back-and-forth scoring, but the Wildcats couldn’t seem to grab the lead. Foul trouble against the Titans early in the second resulted in many free-throw opportunities and scores for Alpena.

After the Wildcat’s started to get points on the board, it took the momentum and never looked back. A steal from Reese Wisniewski to a wide-open layup tied the game, and on the very next possession, Avery Dubey scored to take the lead.

Going into the break, Alpena was up 20-18.

Coming out of halftime, the Wildcat’s defense was outstanding. Alpena only allowed four points throughout the third quarter and forced plenty of turnovers.

The forced turnovers turned into easy baskets for Alpena on offense and set up Dubey to keep scoring.

During the quarter Dubey scored another five points including a deep three.

The final quarter displayed even better defense from Alpena and a much more dynamic offense.

West was held to just two points off of free throws while the Wildcats showed relentless offense. Kiera Prue and Dubey scored another five points during the quarter and completed the 43-24 win.

“This win streak we’re going on is awesome. This is the perfect time to heat up and be at our best with districts coming up. Our confidence is through the roof and you can see that out on the court. We really need to ride this momentum and if we can do that, we’ll be a very good team for the playoffs,” Dubey said.

Dubey and Prue led the scoring for the Wildcats. Dubey finished with 16 points and Prue had 10.

Reagan LaCross and Grace Bohrer were the leading scorers for TC West. LaCross had seven points and Bohrer had six.

Alpena plays Oscoda on Monday.
