ALPENA — A crash sent the driver of a 1974 Corvette to the hospital in critical condition on Wednesday, the Michigan State Police reported on Friday.

Nathan Douglas, 25, of Alpena, crossed the center line and drove off the south side of Long Rapids Road in Maple Ridge Township while driving northwest, striking several trees before coming to rest in the ditch, police said.

Finding the driver unconscious and unresponsive in the vehicle, responders extricated Douglas and performed first aid before transporting him to MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, to which Douglas was transferred, now lists him in critical condition, according to police

Neither alcohol nor other intoxicants appeared during a preliminary investigation, police said, but police believe speed was a factor in the crash. Douglas was not wearing a seatbelt, police believe.
