Woman gets chance to turn her life around in Alpena drug case

ALPENA — A woman with a substantial court record tied to addiction was given a chance to start again on Monday when Judge Ed Black agreed to let her try drug treatment before putting her behind bars.

In an apology to Alpena’s 26th Circuit Court after pleading guilty to possession of methamphetamine, Olivia McKinnon, 22, told the court she has struggled with addiction since she was 11.

Attorney Bill Pfeifer said McKinnon was facing three futures — a successful escape from addiction, a long time behind bars, “or she’s going to die,” Pfeifer said.

“Everyone in this courtroom believes you can do this,” Black told McKinnon, sentencing her to 12 months’ incarceration with jail time held in abeyance while she attends a residential drug treatment program. “It’s got to be you that wants it.”

McKinnon is required to receive mental health treatment and perform 80 hours of community service as part of her sentence.
