Appeals Court: Presque Isle County sentence stands

Dylan Haire

ROGERS CITY — A 27-year-old man will be in prison for the rest of his life, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled recently.

Dylan Haire, sentenced to multiple consecutive sentences for sexually assaulting and photographing several small children in Presque Isle County in 2017, appealed his conviction to the higher court, claiming his confession of the crime shouldn’t have been admissible.

The Appeals Court disagreed.

A parole officer discovered photos of the children on Haire’s camera. Haier admitted the pictures belong to him and told police he also sexually assaulted the children.

Haire, who had at least four previous run-ins with the law, was on parole and living in an adult foster care home when he abused the children, aged 2 to 6 — actions he recorded in detail in a notebook recovered from his jail cell.

Haire was acquitted of charges involving the youngest victim because the child was not identified at trial.

He told the Appeals Court his confession of the assaults shouldn’t have been admissible because they were made before there was any proof the crime had been committed.

The local court followed the rules in the conviction, as well as in imposing Haire’s sentence — which will leave him behind bars for at least 80 more years — the Appeals Court said.

That sentence is in addition to time he is serving for possession of child sexully abusive material in Alpena. Haire’s earliest release date is May 25, 2100.
