Another Alcona County resident dies after infection

ALPENA — One more Alcona County resident has died while infected with the coronavirus, and three additional Montmorency County residents were confirmed infected, local public health officials reported today.

No new recoveries were reported.

It marks the second time an Alcona County resident died after being infected with the disease. The first Alcona County resident died on April 29.

District Health Department No. 2 wouldn’t provide any information about the deceased, citing federal health privacy laws.

The news brings the death toll for Northeast Michiganders to 17, including 14 Alpena County residents, one Presque Isle County resident, and two Alcona County residents.

A total of 170 Northeast Michigan residents have been infected since the virus hit Michigan in mid-March, including 116 Alpena County residents, 19 Presque Isle County residents, 10 Montmorency County residents, and 25 Alcona County residents.

Ninety-five of the Northeast Michiganders infected lare linked to nursing homes, including 61 residents and 31 staffers of MediLodge of Alpena, one resident and one staffer at MediLodge of Rogers City, and one staffer at Lincoln Haven. Nine MediLodge of Alpena residents died while infected with the disease, according to state data.

Of the Northeast Michiganders infected, 139 have recovered, including 100 Alpena County residents, 13 Presque Isle County residents, six Montmorency County residents, and 20 Alcona County residents.

The state reported 19 new deaths and 419 new cases of coronavirus statewide, bringing the total number of deaths to 6,368 and the total number of cases to 94,697.
