Rogers City schools closed again for sickness

ROGERS CITY — Rogers City Area Schools has canceled school again this year because of illness.

Superintendent Nick Hein said school is canceled today because of illness among students. He said only a few staff members have been out sick.

He hopes school is only canceled today.

“I hope that this is the last of it,” Hein said.

Hein said the district was right at 75% of students in attendance on Friday. The district has just over 510 students, so about 130 students were absent Friday.

At least 75% of students must be in class for schools to get credit for the day, according to state law.

“My school nurse has confirmed the majority of it was the flu,” Hein said of the students who were absent on Friday.

District Health Department No. 4 Medical Director Josh Meyerson said last week that the flu has been widespread for about five to six weeks in Northeast Michigan.

The district canceled school three times in February because of illness. It has not canceled school once this year because of bad weather.

Alpena, Atlanta, and Hillman schools have previously canceled class this school year, and other events, because of illness among students and staff.
