Barriers redirect traffic on 2nd Avenue in Alpena on Friday. A large water, sewer, and road project there will begin Monday. The project will happen in phases and could wrap up in August. Until then, motorists will have to find alternate routes around the construction.

Some residents on Alpena's north side needed to be evacuated from their homes on Wednesday as a miss dig by the construction company working on the 2nd Avenue road project inadvertently ruptured a large gas line.
Employees from DTE Energy were able to cap the leak and Alpena Fire Chief Rob Edmonds cleared the scene soon after.
According to Edmonds, construction crews broke a three to four-inch gas line near the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Fletcher Street, which forced the fire department to remove people from the area.
