Bolser seeks app for new Alpena County prosecutor

ALPENA — Local attorneys have a week to throw their hat in the ring to be considered as the next Alpena County prosecutor.

Resumes are due by March 6 for any local attorney interested in being considered for the prosecutor position, according to Benjamin Bolser, chief judge for the 26th Circuit Court.

The position will be vacant beginning Friday, when current Prosecutor Ed Black is sworn in as 26th Circuit Court judge. Black was appointed to the position by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to fill the remainder of the term of Judge Michael Mack, who retired in January after being pulled from the docket amid a police investigation. Police have not disclosed why they are investigating Mack.

Bolser, as chief judge, will appoint a replacement for Black through the rest of the prosecutor’s term, which ends Jan. 1, 2021. Voters will choose both a Circuit Court judge and an Alpena County prosecutor in the November election.

After resumes are submitted and interviews are conducted, Black’s replacement will be chosen by Bolser in conjunction with the other circuit court judges, Bolser said.

Black, who will by then be sworn in as judge, will be a part of his successor’s selection, as will 88th District Court Judge Thomas LaCross.

As of today, no resumes had been received, Bolser said.
