Weekend brings more snow to area

News Photo by Julie Goldberg Snow piles are starting to appear throughout Alpena, as seen here Sunday at Kiwanis Kiddie Park. Alpena got hit with 5.4 inches of snow through Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

ALPENA – This past weekend was the second straight weekend that the Northeast Michigan region was hit with some snow.

The National Weather Service reported that the Alpena-area got 5.4 inches of snow through Saturday evening.

Dan Cornish, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord, said the area received an additional 2.2 inches of snow late Saturday night through Sunday morning after the initial 5.4 inches of snow.

Cornish said the projected forecast for the weekend was between five and eight inches of snow, so the snowfall was right where the predictions were.

“It was right where we expected it, especially along the southern part of the area near Houghton Lake, to the west in Traverse City, and to the north in the Upper Peninsula as well,” Cornish said on Sunday.

Cornish said the snowfall was widespread in the state. Sault Ste. Marie got five inches of snow and Houghton Lake got six inches of snow on Saturday.

Last weekend, the region got between three and six inches of snowfall.

The average wind speed on Saturday was 12.8 mph with the highest wind speed reaching 28 mph.

For this week, Cornish said it will be a dry week with low chances of precipitation.

But, the area could get some snow on Thursday. Cornish said they’re monitoring what could come with snow then.

Since Thursday is still days away, Cornish said it’s uncertain right now what the area could get in terms of snowfall.

“The details about the weather will get clearer as Thursday gets closer,” he said.

The Alpena-area has gotten 16.4 inches of snow so far in January.
