ALPENA — Isabelle Tankersley,, an Alpena County 4‒H member, had the opportunity to attend the 4‒H Capitol Experience in March in Lansing.
The 4‒H Capitol Experience is a state-wide civic engagement event designed to help youth learn how state government works and how young people can actively participate in the policy‒making process. Participants visited the state Capitol, met with elected officials, policy experts, and community leaders and explored a wide range of careers connected to public service.
They also engaged in meaningful discussions with peers from across Michigan who are making positive differences in their communities. The kids also took part in mock legislative sessions focused on “hot topic” issues that matter to young people.
While attending the Capitol Experience, Tankersley worked with her peers on a mock bill that proposed introducing agricultural education in 7th and 8th grade classrooms. The goal of the bill was to expose students to agriculture at an appropriate age, recognizing that many youth in that age group have little to no exposure to agriculture.
Tankersley identified that middle school is a time when students begin thinking about their interests and future pathways, and that learning about agriculture earlier could help them make more informed career choices.
In the mock process, the bill successfully passed in the House, was signed by the governor, but did not advance in the Senate, giving participants a realistic look at how legislation moves–and sometimes stalls–within government.
Reflecting on her experience, Tankersley said that a key takeaway for her was learning more about the political side of things and getting a better understanding of how all of it works.
She said the overall experience was meaningful and impactful.
“It was so good, and I am so thankful I went, ” Tankersley said.
