ALPENA — On Thursday morning, the Alpena Township Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the attic of a residence.

Upon arrival, firefighters found that the homeowners, with assistance from the Michigan State Police, had already taken quick action using fire extinguishers to slow the spread of the fire.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the remaining fire and worked to prevent further damage to the home, Alpena Township Fire Chief Tim Baker said in a press release on Friday.

Thanks to the swift actions of the occupants and first responders, the fire was contained, and no injuries were reported. Baker said people should be ready for fires and plan ahead so they can respond accordingly if one happens.

“This incident is a strong reminder of the importance of being prepared,” Baker said. “Working smoke detectors, accessible fire extinguishers, and a practiced home evacuation plan can make all the difference in an emergency.”

The Alpena Township Fire Department also urges residents to ensure that any electrical work in the home is performed by a licensed and certified electrician to reduce the risk of electrical fires.
