ALPENA — The piles of dirt and presence of construction vehicles at Alpena High School are nothing to worry about, as construction projects are on track for completion by the first day of school, Alpena Public Schools Director of Communications Lee Fitzpatrick said on Tuesday.

Summer construction at AHS is scheduled to be completed by the first day of school, which is Monday, Aug. 25 this year.

Some paving will be done during the school year at times when school is not in session, but construction in the building itself will be completed by the time students return, Fitzpatrick said.

Summer 2025 construction at the high school is the final project of the Safe, Warm, Dry bond.

In 2020, voters in the APS district passed a $33.9 million bond for upgrades to buildings and grounds and improvements to safety and security.

Construction at AHS is underway to enhance safety, functionality, and infrastructure across the campus, according to a 2025 construction update.

Work is being done on new secure entry points. The main office and student entrance will be redesigned to improve building security and visitor management.

The main office is also being remodeled to support a more efficient workflow and enhance safety for staff and students.

New concrete sidewalks and new pavement on all parking lots and driveways will be completed to enhance traffic flow and replace aging infrastructure.

These projects are part of the district’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, welcoming, and modern learning environments, the update stated.
