ROGERS CITY — With an all-high schooler cast, Rogers City Community Theatre presents “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” opening tonight. The play, written by Jay Presson Allen and adapted from the novel by Murial Spark, is showing at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday, with a final 2 p.m. performance Sunday, at Rogers City Theater.

In 1930’s Scotland, a charismatic teacher impresses upon her young charges the importance of individuality, freedom, and enrichment of the mind. But are her lofty ideals really what they seem? Is an irresistibly compelling leader, in the end, good for people?

Jean Brodie, unmarried in a country depleted of eligible bachelors by the destruction of World War I, dedicates her life to her students at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls. Her free-spirited ways and nontraditional methods endear her to her adoring students, but to the administration, she is dangerous.

Determinedly “in her prime,” despite her increasing years, Brodie is a force to be reckoned with, holding at bay an admiring art teacher and a besotted music teacher while admonishing her girls to put down their history books while she tells them tales of scandalous Italian artists, tantalizing operas, and her own romantic dalliances.

“Safety does not come first. Goodness, truth, and beauty come first,” she tells her girls, prodding them to follow her example of living outside the bounds of normal societal rules.

As the girls age and move toward adulthood, their understanding of their beloved teacher begins to change as they see the woman behind the charisma, a woman who is not entirely who she claims to be. The question begins to arise: What is dangerous? Can the compelling charm of a charismatic leader lead to the downfall of the people who blindly follow where it leads?

The 2019 high school production will be performed at the Rogers City Theater, 257 N 3rd St. in Rogers City. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $6 for students, and tickets will be available at the door.
