Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan

The Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan followed by a Scottish High Tea will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Alpena at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.

This heritage service will feature a bagpiper, a discussion of the significance of St. Andrew, and a blessing on all the world’s tartans. The high tea will include trifles, scones and other delectables in the fellowship hall.

There is no cost to partake. Attendees are encouraged to bring or wear something that celebrates their own heritage. The church is located at the corner of U.S.-23 North and Long Rapids Road.

The Alpena Area Parkinson’s support group will meet at 1 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, 167 Ripley Blvd.

Sal. Army needs coats

The Salvation Army administrative office is accepting donations of new and gently worn coats at 722 N. 2nd Ave., Alpena (next door to the Salvation Army Church).Drop off donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, now through Friday, Oct. 18. For more information, call 989-358-2769.

Alpena County Dems dinner/dance Oct. 19

The Alpena County Democratic Party will be hosting a dinner/dance fundraiser from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club, 1960 M-32 West in Alpena.

Music will be provided by Great Lakes Effect, and there will be a meet and greet with Dana Ferguson, candidate for the 1st Congressional District next year.

Oktoberfest plans set

Following the October 2nd meeting of the Alpena Knights of Columbus, plans for the Sunrise Side Oktoberfest dinner/dance were finalized. Table and hall decoration plans are complete. The K of C Council 529 will be celebrating their 7th Annual Dinner/Dance, Sunday, Oct. 20.

Doors open at 1 p.m., music and dancing to the Norm Siess Band is from 2 to 5:30 p.m. A cash bar will be available, and a pork loin dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each. No tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Perch’s IGA, Neiman’s Family Market and Garant’s Party Store. Bridge winners set

This week’s Alpena Duplicate Bridge winners were Fred Woolman and Eve Phillips in first place, Gayle Nowak and Deanna Brege in second place, and Dale and Connie Middleditch in third place. The group meets Mondays at 12:45 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Call 989-595-5119.

Leadercast Women Fri.

Leadercast Women is a one-day leadership event on Friday at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.

Attendees from all walks of life come together to hear inspirational stories from women leaders. The event features an all-woman cast but the experts deliver actionable leadership insights for all leaders, male and female. The event is broadcast live from Atlanta, Ga., and hosted locally by the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce.Leaders in the Alpena area are invited to discover the power of taking courage in their daily leadership lives.

banquet Wednesday

Hillman Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual banquet Wednesday, with hors d’oeuvres and light refreshments at 5:30 p.m., and dinner at 6 p.m. at Patchwood Plaza, 14797 State St.

At the event, the outstanding business of the year and outstanding citizen of the year will be announced and awarded. Tickets are $20. Call 989-742-3739.

Little kid events at ACL

Tiny Tots Story Time, for kids birth through age 2-1/2 and a parent or caregiver, is from 10 to 11 a.m. on these Thursdays: Oct. 17 and 31, Nov. 14, and Dec. 12.

Preschool Play Date, for kids age 2-1/2 to 5 years with an adult, is from 10 to 11 a.m. on these Tuesdays: Oct. 22, Nov. 5 and 19, and Dec. 3.
