LWV to celebrate 100 years Sunday at library

The League of Women Voters of Alpena County invites the public to join them at 2 p.m. Sunday, upstairs at Alpena County Library, to celebrate 100 years of the LWV of the U.S. The festive celebration will feature 100 cupcakes and local LWV members in suffrage-style white and patriotic sashes.

The League of Women Voters of the United States grew out of the women’s suffrage movement which resulted, in 1920, in the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote.

A brief program will be a part of the afternoon, with readings by LWV members about the 70-year battle to win the vote. Readings will address the hostile political, economic, social, racial and religious background of the time and touch on the tension of Tennessee possibly being the 36th state required for ratification.

Christina Schlitt, president of the Michigan LWV, will comment on the history of the organization and members will share their stories of the local league.

A memorable part of the celebration will be an official vote by the membership to approve the name change of the local Alpena County League to “League of Women Voters of Northeast Michigan.”

All are welcome to come to the celebration and share in the history of the League of Women Voters with its background of “100 Years Strong” and its future of “Making Democracy Work.”
