Rare opportunity to buy vintage books

News Photo by Diane Speer Here’s a sampling of some of the vintage books that will be offered in a Newspapers in Education book sale that begins Friday at The Alpena News office.

The popular Newspapers in Education Book Sale sponsored by The Alpena News ordinarily takes place once a year. Look for an exciting exception this year, however.

Due to a large number of vintage books generously donated by the public over the last five to six years, a special book sale is planned at The Alpena News office at 130 Park Place. The sale begins this Friday and continues Nov. 5-9 of the following week. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The sale will feature nearly 250 titles, with publication dates ranging from as early as 1847 for an antique Bible up to the mid-1950s. A few more recent titles (circa 1980s) also will be included.

Online book selling sources were consulted to help determine pricing. Prices range from $3 to $30 per volume. Some of the books do show wear.

All proceeds still will benefit the NIE Program that allows multiple schools in the region to receive free copies of the newspaper to use in their classrooms for educational purposes.

Here’s a sampling of titles to be included in the sale:

∫ 1896 – McGuffey’s Third Eclectic Reader,” shows some wear but contains charming illustrations

∫ 1897 – “Tales from Hans Anderson,” very worn

∫ 1897 – “Alaska and the Klondike Gold Fields” by A.C. Harris, worn condition

∫ 1916 – “A Child’s Garden of Verses” by Robert Louis Stevenson

∫ 1921-38 – Numerous hardbound Westerns by Zane Grey

∫ 1944 – “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Ernest Hemmingway

∫ 1946 – “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Volume I & II”

∫ 1950 – “Little Pictures of Japan: My Travelship,” beautifully illustrated book of haiku poetry

∫ 1950 – 11 volume “The Story of Civilization” history series by Will Durant

∫ 1950 – “Audubon’s Birds of America”

∫ 1953 – “The Complete Sherlock Holmes”
