Library protects heritage, vote yes on Aug. 6

For four years, I had the privilege of serving as the Special Collections librarian for the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library. While in this role, I was always amazed by the diversity of users not only in my department but the library itself. One day, it could be someone hoping to research their family’s history. As you may know, there is a small group of people in Alpena who are threatening to close our library if a group of books they deem inappropriate are not removed from the shelves and restricted under lock and key to check out by those age 18 and older. This, of course, is the first step toward book banning by a small, radical, fringe group of ideologues. This group is “demanding” they get their way, or they will “defund” our library. Close it down. Concerned about Everyday Faith column in News

I am concerned about the religious column, “Lust of the flesh,” in our local newspaper. This inclusion poses significant dangers to our community and the principles of journalism. Firstly, the separation of church and state is fundamental to ensuring public spaces remain neutral and inclusive. A newspaper should be a beacon of unbiased information, not a platform for religious teachings, which risks alienating readers of different beliefs and blurs the line between objective reporting and proselytizing. News misrepresented Northeast Michigan TNR

On June 5, The Alpena News published an article in the Local News section titled “Kitten season in Alpena County,” written by Courtney Boyd. Within this article it states: “Northeast Michigan Trap Neuter Return (TNR), a nonprofit program in the region that specializes in trapping feral and hostile cats, neutering them, and releasing them back into the wild …” On June 7, Alpena News published a similar article within the Editorial and Columns section titled, “It’s kitten season; spay and neuter your pets,” which had a similar message about Northeast Michigan TNR. ...

I don’t see the U.S. as a third-world country

Recently, two very special holidays were celebrated across our country — Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. In my home, both brought a considerable sense of pride in this country we do call HOME. But, apparently, this same sense of pride seems to have been lost by one of our political candidates … Donald J. Trump.
