Library protects heritage, vote yes on Aug. 6
For four years, I had the privilege of serving as the Special Collections librarian for the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library.
While in this role, I was always amazed by the diversity of users not only in my department but the library itself. One day, it could be someone hoping to research their family’s history. The next could be a newcomer to the region wanting to learn about their house’s history and the previous families that lived there.
Within the vast array of materials, the library had the resources to help with such questions.
Some only see the Special Collections department as a small room with some books. What they may not realize is that the award-winning department has thousands of photographs, postcards, letters, diaries, and so much more that only exist within that department. If the department went away, so much of our community’s heritage would disappear: genealogical records, photographs of the community from 1860 to 2000, maps, and more. No other historical societies or nonprofits in our area that allow such access could fill this void.
I am reminded of a photograph of Ski Rack’s manager Don Eglas cross-country skiing along Chisholm Street after a snowstorm in the 1970s. What may be a simple photograph to others was a chance to reminisce about Alpena’s past. Hundreds of people liked the picture and shared incredible memories of Ski Rack, skiing, and Alpena during the 70s.
On a higher level, this photo was a jumping point to discuss our downtown’s development: the boom during the 70s, the growth of strip malls, and the role of small businesses.
This is just one example out of a thousand that spark conversations and a shared sense of belonging and community. I encourage you to ensure this heritage is protected and vote yes on Aug. 6.
DON La BARRE,
Alpena
