Please support Alpena County Library Aug. 6
As you may know, there is a small group of people in Alpena who are threatening to close our library if a group of books they deem inappropriate are not removed from the shelves and restricted under lock and key to check out by those age 18 and older.
This, of course, is the first step toward book banning by a small, radical, fringe group of ideologues.
This group is “demanding” they get their way, or they will “defund” our library. Close it down. It’s happened in other communities.
If this doesn’t make you absolutely furious, it should.
Even if you don’t frequent our excellent library, or have never set foot in it, this behavior by a small and small-minded pack of bullies in violation of the First Amendment should raise alarms. And, unfortunately, the county commissioners and Alpena News seem to be listening to (supporting?) this gang. Neither has even contacted the library director or asked for the library’s position.
There is a vote on renewing the library millage on Aug. 6. Please vote, and vote yes to renew. The last day to register to vote is July 22. This is not a new tax, just a renewal, to keep the library open.
Also, please take the time to write a letter to the editor of The Alpena News and Alpena County commissioners expressing your support for our library. We all pay to support our library. Please don’t let a tiny, loud gang of radicals force their warped views on the vast majority of us who want the library to continue providing excellent service to all of the entire community.
BILL BOCK,
Alpena
