LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: ACC softball takes 3 of 4 from St. Clair

ALPENA — The Alpena Community College softball team took three out of four games at home this weekend against St. Clair.

ACC dropped a close game, 8-7, to open the weekend, but responded with wins of 6-0, 13-2 and 17-6.

The Lumberjacks led 6-5 late in their first game on Saturday, but the Skippers scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead for good.

ACC scattered 13 hits in the loss. Paige Wooden and Mollie Girard each had a home run and Dayna LaBell had a triple. LaBell and Jade Schultz each had three hits and Girard, Wooden and Brooke Ciarkowski each had two hits.

The Lumberjacks rebounded in the nightcap on Saturday to win, 6-0, after scoring six runs in the first four innings. Schultz had a home run among three hits, Wooden had three hits and LaBell had two hits. LaBell, Wooden and Girard each had an RBI. Schultz pitched a complete game shutout, walking one and striking out two.

Alpena’s offense came alive on Sunday as the Lumberjacks scored 30 runs between two games.

ACC got out to a 7-0 early in the first game and added to it on the way to a 13-2 win. Aubree Sheldon and Riley Alexander had four hits each, Schultz had three and Wooden, LaBell, and Girard each had two. Alexander had four RBI and Ciarkowski, Linnea Hentkowski, Sheldon, LaBell and Wooden each had one.

The Lumberjacks pounded out 26 hits in a 17-6 win to end the weekend. Schultz pitched six innings for the win and improved to 6-1 on the season.

At the plate, Schultz had a home run and a triple and four RBI among four hits. Wooden had three RBI and Brittany Buczkowski and Gillian Howard each had two. LaBell had four hits, Linnea Hentkowski had three and Sheldon had two.

JV BASEBALL

Alpena takes 2 from Rudyard

The Alpena JV baseball team improved to 6-2 on the season after taking a pair of games from Rudyard, 14-2 and 12-10 on Saturday.

In the opener, Alpena scored seven runs each in the second and third innings to take control of the game. Bryce Moe had a pair of RBI for the Wildcats and for Alpena pitchers combined to strike out seven.

In the second game, the Wildcats won a slugfest, finally taking the lead for good after a four-run fourth inning and holding off a Rudyard rally attempt in the sixth inning.

Caleb McEwen led Alpena with four hits and Brady Pagels and Zann each had two. Zann and McEwen each had three RBI.

GIRLS SOCCER

Cheboygan 3, Alpena 1

CHEBOYGAN — The Alpena High girls soccer team lost 3-1 to Cheboygan on Friday.

Alpena’s lone goal came from JV call-up Megan Dubie and all four of the game’s goals were scored in the first half.

SOFTBALL

Rudyard sweeps Hillman

The Hillman softball team dropped to 1-4 on the season after a pair of losses to Rudyard on Saturday. The Bulldogs won by scores of 19-3 and 16-2.
