LANSING — The Alpena Community College men’s cross country team finished its outstanding season Saturday at the MCCAA/NJCAA Regional Championships held in Lansing.

The Lumberjacks did not know what to expect for the race, while having to run without their number-three runner, Musa Kubbah, because of a leg injury.

“One of our mantras has always been run with your heart,” ACC coach Mark Jacobs said. “Today, these guys nailed it. They gave it everything they had and more. We beat some teams today that we had no business beating, especially without Musa. Everyone did their job, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

John Siegert (Ludington) earned all-conference and all-region awards, placing 10th overall for the race with a time of 28:26.

“John will go down as one of the greatest runners in ACC history,” Jacobs said. “In the eight years of coaching here, only two other runners (Jared LaBarge and Tylor Ross) have been both All-Conference and All Regional. This speaks volumes of John’s talent and work ethic.”

Following Siegert were Teddy Peters (Onaway) 30:47 and Nate Robey (Big Rapids) 30:51. Rounding out the top five were Connor Bagnell (Memphis) 31:17 and Runi Demirkol (Istanbul, Turkey) 32:45, who both ran career bests.

Demirkol was followed by Yuki Nishibashi (Ostu, Japan) 35:02 and Duncan Ross (Rogers City) 36:47.

“I have absolutely loved every second of coaching these guys,” Jacobs said. Anytime your team becomes a family, you know it’s been a successful year.”
