PREP ROUNDUP: Alcona falls to Johannesburg
JOHANNESBURG–The Alcona football team’s stay in the postseason was a short one as the Tigers lost 49-16 to Johannesburg-Lewiston in a Division 8 predistrict game on Friday.
Gavin Walker led Alcona’s offense with 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Walker also led Alcona’s defense with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Quarterback Zach Stephenson connected with Jacob Sytek on a two-point conversion on offense and Kaden Goldberg had a fumble recovery on defense.
The Tigers finished the 2020 season 0-7, but came up just short of victory in several games, including a pair of one-score losses to Rogers City on the final play of the game both times.
VOLLEYBALL
TC Central 3, Alpena 0
TRAVERSE CITY–The Alpena High volleyball team was plagued by service errors on Wednesday and was swept by Traverse City Central in a Big North Conference match.
Alpena lost 22-25, 15-25 and 20-25.
Allie DeRocher had nine kills and six digs for Alpena, Jade Gray had five kills and three aces and Kami Schultz had four kills.
Alpena’s JV team lost 22-25, 10-25, 26-20.
Alpena’s freshmen team won 25-15, 28-26 and 25-20.
Hillman 3, Fairview 2
The Hillman volleyball team went the distance with Fairview on Wednesday and came out victorious, topping the Eagles 3-2.
Hillman won 13-25, 14-25, 25-15, 25-9 and 15-11.
Nicole Barbeau had five aces, 18 digs, 13 assists and a kill for Hillman; Angelina Hunt had five aces, seven digs, six kills and a block; Jessie Jones had an ace, three digs and four kills; Emalie Lis had two aces, a dig and 11 kills; Melanie Morrison had six aces, 15 digs, an ace and a kill; Davi Stewart had 11 digs and a kill and Julia Taratuta had three aces, 26 digs, five assists and four kills.
