PREP ROUNDUP: Cassidy paces Pellston past Cards; Posen wins on Senior Night

ONAWAY–Blake Cassidy proved too much for the Onaway boys basketball team to contain on Tuesday.

The Pellston senior scored 36 points and took over in the second half, leading the Hornets past Onaway 72-59 in a Ski Valley Conference matchup.

Onaway (4-16, 3-13 SVC) made it a three-possession game with about three minutes to play, but couldn’t pull any closer after cutting Pellston’s lead to nine.

The Cardinals trailed 19-14 after one quarter, 37-29 at halftime and 55-42 after three quarters.

“Blake Cassidy is one of the better players around. He took over and we couldn’t contain him,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “Other than (Cassidy’s big game) I thought we played a really good game. Our guys played their butts off and I’m proud of them.”

Jager Mix paced Onaway with 19 points, Austin Nash added 12, Kevin Pearson had 10 and Daniel Price chipped in with eight.

The Cardinals are off until next week when district play begins in Onaway.

Posen 51, Fairview 20

POSEN–The Posen boys basketball team was victorious on Senior Night, defeating Fairview 51-20.

Cameron Paull, who was one of five seniors honored on Tuesday, scored 21 points and Lucas Stone added 10 for the Vikings (15-4, 9-1 NSL Little Dipper).

Along with Paull, Eyan Hincka, Wyatt Romel, George Kroll and Tyler Hincka were honored during Senior Night festivities.

“We were able to send them (the seniors) out with a win and all 11 guys got to see (time on) the floor,” Posen coach Chris Keller said.

Posen raced out to a 15-4 lead after one quarter and built its lead to 36-9 by halftime and 43-12 after three quarters.

Eyan Hincka added nine points for the Vikings, who close out the regular season at Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday.

Ogemaw Heights 72, Hale 66

HALE–Despite another stellar effort from senior Joe Kimmerer, the Hale boys basketball team came up just short of victory on Tuesday, losing to Ogemaw Heights 72-66.

Both sides played to a 32-32 tie at halftime and a 51-51 tie after three quarters, but Ogemaw (13-6) rallied in the last quarter, outscoring the Eagles 21-15.

Kimmererer paced Hale (15-4) with 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Garrett Beebe added 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Tyler Eedy led Ogemaw with 26 points.
