Alcona, Oscoda advance to district finals

WHITTEMORE — Megan Grove scored 19 points and knocked down four clutch free-throws at the end of the game to help her Alcona Tigers defeated Tawas 40-38 in Wednesday’s Division 3 district semifinal contest.

“As the old adage goes, it is hard to beat a team three times in a season,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “Both teams played their hearts out and we were able to get the win.”

The Tigers held leads after the first two quarters and Tawas tied the game after three quarters, but Alcona held on late to end the Braves’ season.

Rachel Layton added seven points for the Tigers and Anna Loyer and Liz Henderson each finished with five points apiece.

Alcona will advance to Friday’s district championship matchup against North Star League rival Oscoda.

The Tigers and Owls have met in the district finals the past two seasons, with each team earning a victory and claiming a district trophy once in the past two years.

“Out total focus was on winning this game. We will go back and have one practice then play Oscoda,” Feldhiser said. “I know that our girls are looking forward to the challenge.

Oscoda 68,

WHITTEMORE — Izzy Hulverson, Macy Kellstrom and Jessica Montgomery combined to score 49 points and lead the Oscoda girls basketball team to a 68-46 win over Whittemore-Prescott in Wednesday’s Division 3 district semifinal game.

The trio outscored the host Cardinals by themselves and helped the Owls advance to Friday’s district championship matchup where they will play Alcona.
