ACC women play hard, but fade late vs. Delta

The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team gave everything it had to give on Saturday, but time and a lack of depth worked against the Lumberjacks in a 74-60 loss to Delta at Park Arena.

Kathelyn Englehardt scored 22 points and was the difference-maker in the game for the Pioneers, who pulled away from ACC (4-20) with a 24-13 run in the third quarter.

Kennedi Maurer added 14 points for Delta and Isabelle Baranski had 13.

For the first half, the Lumberjacks scrapped with Delta, briefly held the lead and played a tight game despite an injury late in the half to Abby Larsen. The sophomore forward went down late in the second quarter and returned late in third quarter, but the time in between left an already depleted ACC roster with just six players.

Dakota Prevo led ACC with 19 points and 13 rebounds and was a force inside early on, scoring on put-backs and taking inside feeds for easy buckets. ACC complimented Prevo’s steady inside game with solid outside shooting. A trio of three-pointers–one from Mollie Girard and two from Brooke Nguyen–helped ACC take a 17-11 lead late in the first quarter after withstanding a brief Delta surge.

For the contest, ACC made seven triples, including four by Nguyen.

With the game tied at 21 after one quarter, Englehardt took the game over to put the Pioneers ahead for good. The sophomore guard scored 10 points in the second quarter, including the go-ahead basket with 4:26 left.

ACC fell behind by as many as seven late in the half, but recovered briefly to cut it to three before a pair of late buckets sent the Pioneers to halftime with a 40-32 lead.

As time wound down in the second half, mistakes mounted for a tired ACC squad and the Lumberjacks couldn’t keep up with Delta offensively. The Lumberjacks trailed by eight early in the third quarter, but a 10-0 Delta run resulted in a double-digit deficit ACC couldn’t cut into and Delta led 64-45 by the end of the period.

In addition to a big game from Prevo, Nguyen and Girard finished in double figures with 15 and 10 points respectively. Lillian Black added seven points and 10 rebounds.

ACC wraps up the season this week with two contests. The Lumberjacks host St. Clair on Monday and will play at Macomb on Wednesday.
