Manning earns 2nd-team Big North honors
GAYLORD–Lucas Manning made his first Big North Conference race a memorable one.
Manning, an Alpena senior, finished 11th at the Big North Conference Championship on Tuesday, crossing the line in 17:26.33. In doing so, Manning earned second team all-conference honors.
Manning was the only Alpena runner to make the all-conference teams, but the Wildcats turned in nine season-best times and one career-best time during cold and rainy conditions.
Alpena got season-best times from Hunter Hitzelberger, Manning, Nehemiah Rao, Eli Rondeau, Cameron Young, Tyler Van Cleave, Kaylee Rondeau, Ava Shriner and Veronica Zaborney. Ben Poli turned in a career-best time.
Behind Manning, Alpena’s male varsity finishers were: Hitzelberger (20th, 18:01.45); Elijah Allen (22nd, 18:09.15); Jacob Kochanski (28th, 18:46.01); Blake Macdonald (32nd, 19:03.46); Matthew Guest (34th, 19:53.59) and Westen Domke (37th, 10:19.91).
Young led Alpena in the JV boys race, finishing in 18:17.79 and second overall. Other top Alpena finishers included Nehemiah Rao (19th, 19:27.91); Poli (22nd, 19:34.80); Tom Sheridan (30th, 19:58.06) and Eli Rondeau (32nd, 20:01.67).
Molly Dickinson led Alpena’s female varsity runners with a 27th place finish (21:29.26). Other Alpena finishers were: Kaylee Rondeau (28th, 21:36.03); Alexis Reynolds (34th, 22:44.24); Grace Mitchell (36th, 23:21.36); Tiffany Foster (39th, 24:58.03) and Karlin Decker (41st, 26:35.45).
Zaborney led Alpena’s female JV finishers with a 47th place finish (26:06.98). Shriner was 51st (26:51.27) and Emeline Hanna was 55th (27:47.17)
Former Alpena runner and current Traverse City Central junior Drew Seabase finished second and earned first team all-conference honors after finishing in 16:22.43.
