Alpena wins Midland Fusion soccer tourney

The Alpena U19 girls travel soccer team took top honors at the recent Midland Fusion soccer tournament.

Alpena defeated Midland Fusion 4-2 in a rematch on Sunday afternoon to win the tournament. Alpena played tough and determined from the start and Sarah Campbell gave Alpena an early lead, scoring on a breakaway goal after a pass from Kennedy Kaiser. Kami Schultz scored a break away goal again from Kaiser to put Alpena up 2-0.

Alpena’s defense played tough especially Alexis Treinen, Jenna Leeck and Maggie Kelly as well as Alpena’s goalkeeper Edie Zann.

Right before halftime, Kaiser bodied in a corner kick goal from Macy Dickinson giving Alpena a three-goal lead. Midland scored early in the second half, but Campbell padded Alpena’s lead again with a goal just 10 minutes later with an assist from Kaiser.

In its opening game, Alpena defeated Saginaw Freeze 4-2 and was helped by four first-half goals. Anna Young kicked things off with a goal on an assist from Kaiser and later scored again unassisted.

Anna Woods scored from Leeck to make it 3-0 and Woods scored a second goal on a rebound shot from Young.

Breanna Boyk, Olivia Rochefort, and Eve Dragiewicz, played a strong game in the midfield. Saginaw scored twice in the second half, but fell short.

In Game 2, Midland topped Alpena 4-1. Midland led 2-0 at halftime before Young scored 10 minutes into the second half to cut the lead in half. Midland dominated after that and Alpena lost, despite a solid game from keeper Josalyn Bailey.

In a must-win game on Sunday, Alpena defeated the Harbor Springs Sailors 4-3 after rallying for a win.

Alpena trailed 3-0 just 20 minutes into the game before it got going. Young scored on a nice pass from Campbell to make it 3-1 and Schultz scored right before halftime from a Macy Dickinson corner kick to make it 3-2.

Alpena came out tough in the second half with Addi Marceau dominating on defense and strong midfield play from Mikayla Smith and Kyla VanWagner. Alpena tied the game when Schultz headed in a cross from Campbell. Young eventually got the game winner on a corner kick from Dickinson.
