Local hoops stars honored by BCAM, Free Press

Several local girls basketball players recently were honored by the Detroit Free Press after the paper announced its all-state girls basketball teams on Sunday.

Oscoda’s Lauren Langley and Rogers City’s Taylor Fleming earned the highest honors and were both named to the Division 3 second team.

Fleming–a two-time All-Alpena News Player of the Year–earned first team all-state honors from the Associated Press and was an all-North Star League selection. She finished her high school career as one of only Rogers City girls basketball players to record 1,000 career points. She led the area in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 19.8 points and 18.7 rebounds per game.

Langley–a first team All-Alpena News selection–was also an all-NSL pick. She averaged 15.7 points and 10.6 rebounds per game and was a key contributor on a team that won 22 straight games.

Langley’s teammate Katelyn Etherton earned an honorable mention in Division 3. Etherton was also a first team All-Alpena News pick, an all-NSL pick and reached 1,000 career points as a senior. She averaged 16.7 points per game and helped the Owls win their first ever district title.

Posen’s Brooke Ciarkowski earned an honorable mention in Division 4. Ciarkowski, also a first team All-Alpena News pick, was an all-NSL pick and a versatile player for the Vikings, stepping in at center. She averaged 14.8 points per game and was third in the area in rebounding with 9.9 rebounds per game.

Fleming was also one of three players to recently be honored by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) as one of BCAM’s Best.

Players are nominated for the honor by their BCAM member coaches.

Fleming was named to the girls Division 3 BCAM’s Best list and Alpena’s Chris DeRocher appeared on the same list for Division 1 boys. Posen’s Jared Sharpe earned an honorable mention in Division 4.

DeRocher was recently named to the Free Press’ Division 1 third team. He also earned an all-state honorable mention from the AP and was a all-Big North Conference first team selection. He was named Alpena News Player of the Year twice and finishing his career with 1,624 points to set a new program scoring mark. He led the area this past season with 22.9 points per game.

Sharpe was an all-NSL selection who also averaged 20.6 points per game. He also averaged 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.7 steals per game. Sharpe also became the 11th Posen boys basketball player to reach 1,000 career points and helped the Vikings win a district title for the first time since 2012.
