A whole lot of offense

Pioneers pile on runs to overtake Lumberjacks

Delta’s offense was a little too hot for the Alpena Community College softball team to handle on Friday.

Allison Robbins hit a grand slam, Madison Gentry added a three-run home run and the Pioneers’ hitters kept Alpena’s defense busy as Delta swept the Lumberjacks 17-0 (five innings) and 16-8 (five innings) at Alpena High School.

Delta collected 33 hits on the day and used a nine-run inning in each game to pull away from ACC (0-18) early.

In the nightcap, Delta scored twice in the first inning before piling on nine runs in the second inning to take an early 11-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Robbins launched a ball over the fence in left center field for a grand slam. Five batters later, Gentry got ahold of a pitch and sent it over the center field fence.

ACC made solid contact at the plate all day, but many of the balls the Lumberjacks hit ended up right in the path of Delta’s defense. But the Lumberjacks kept at it and finally broke though in the bottom of the second inning with five runs.

Delta got two quick outs, but a walk to Karah Dunson put two runners on. ACC got on the board when Ashley Bigard hit a two-run single. An infield error then allowed leadoff hitter Jessica Marwede to get on base and with runners on first and second, Jasmyn Schultz hit a home run to left field, making it 11-5.

Marwede had an RBI double for the Lumberjacks in the fourth inning and Morgan Dove had a two-run single in the fifth inning for ACC’s final runs.

Delta scored a run in the third inning and two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Dove finished with two hits and two RBI; Marwede had a hit and an RBI; Schultz had a hit and three RBI and Bigard had a hit and two RBI.

Halle Reed led Delta with three hits and four other Delta batters had two hits.

A nine-run first inning paved the way for an easy Delta win in the opener. Kaylie Scott hit a two-run home run to center field and Gillian Schloop had a two-run single as Delta sent 12 batters to the plate in its turn at bat.

The Pioneers added a run in the second inning, two in the third and six more in the fifth inning.

ACC made contact, but Delta was on top of every ball that was hit. The Lumberjacks was limited to four hits, two of which went to Brittany Decker.

Dunson and Emily Vivian each had one.

Decker led off the bottom of the second inning with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. She had a scoring chance later in the inning, but Delta got a force out at home to keep ACC off the board.

The Lumberjacks had runners on first and second with two outs in the fourth, but a line out ended the threat.

ACC continues its home stand with games on Saturday and Sunday against Schoolcraft. Saturday’s games will be at 1 and 3 p.m. and Sunday’s games will be at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
