Oscoda, Alcona girls advance in districts

OSCODA–The postseason is off to a good start for the Oscoda girls basketball team.

Katelyn Etherton scored 14 points and all five Oscoda starters finished in double figures on the way to a 62-45 win over Johannesburg-Lewiston in a Division 3 district quarterfinal on Monday.

The win moves Oscoda (20-0) to a semifinal matchup against Whittemore-Prescott on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

In addition to Etherton’s big night, Izzy Hulverson added 13 points, Macy Kellstrom added 12, Brooke Nowiski added 11 and Lauren Langley had 10.

Sidney Townsend led Joburg with 14 points.

Alcona defeated Rogers City in Monday’s other district quarterfinal, 61-52.

Alcona (11-8) will play Roscommon in the second of two semifinals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers trailed early, but rallied to overtake the Hurons for the second time this season.

Megan Grove led Alcona with 19 points, Hailee Gordy added 13 and Bri Fogle had nine.

Taylor Fleming paced Rogers City (11-8) with 20 points.

“A great game for us – it has been a while since we beat Rogers City,  so we picked a great time to pull it off. Very proud of how we came back twice in this game. We really picked it up on defense after the first quarter,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “We also rebounded very well which is something we really worked on in practice.”

A win on Wednesday would advance Alcona to its fifth straight district final. The Tigers lost in the district final during the 2015 and 2016 postseasons, but are in search of their third consecutive district championship after wins in 2017 and 2018.

The Owls are looking to advance to a second straight district final. Oscoda was edged by Alcona 38-32 in last season’s district final.
