Trojans mercy Alpena; Onaway blanks Joburg

TRAVERSE CITY–The Alpena girls soccer team lost to Traverse City Central by mercy rule, 8-0 on Thursday.

Traverse City led 2-0 early in the first half, but with ten minutes to go the Trojans picked up their pace. Traverse City scored six goals in the next fifteen minutes. The mercy came eight minutes into the second half.

“This is definitely not the way we wanted to go into our tournament on Saturday,” Alpena coach Tim Storch said.

Alpena (6-7-1) hosts the Sunrise Side Soccer Challenge Cup on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Onaway shuts down Joburg

ONAWAY–The Onaway softball team dominated in a doubleheader against Johannesburg-Lewiston on Tuesday, shutting out the Cardinals in two games. In the opener, Onaway won 10-0 in a five inning mercy. In the nightcap, Onaway won 6-0 in six innings.

Onaway’s Calley Selke was the winning pitcher in the opener, striking out twelve batters and allowing only two hits and one walk.

Selke was 1-for-3 with a double and one run scored; Kayla Metty was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI; Kennedy Crawford was 4-for-4 with back-to-back home runs, four RBI, and three runs scored; Maddie McLean was 1-for-2 with one run scored; Taylor Ehrke was 1-for-3 with one run scored; Brittany Buczkowski was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI; Jordan Larson was 1-for-3 with one RBI; Daria Domke was 1-for-3.

In the nightcap, Crawford was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts, allowing just two hits and one walk.

Selke was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, a three-run home run, and two runs scored; Metty was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and one run scored; Elissa Nash was 1-for-2 in her first game back after a concussion; Lauren Welklin was 1-for-2 and Zebany Box scored a run as Welklin’s courtesy runner.

“I’m very pleased, especially with our four home runs. The pitching was very controlled, with just two walks all night,” Onaway softball coach Jodi Brewbaker said. “The girls came to play on Senior Night.”

Onaway (20-3, 14-0 Ski Valley Conference) plays in a tournament in Petoskey on Saturday.

Atlanta drops 2 to Posen

ATLANTA–The Atlanta softball team dropped a pair of North Star League games to Posen on Thursday, losing 24-2 and 18-2.

\In the opener, Brooke Ciarkowski had a double, a triple, a home run and four RBI for Posen; Taylor Roznowski was 3-for-4; Brianna Kuffel was 2-for-3; Riley Krajniak had three RBI and Hannah Stone had four RBI.

Posen scored 10 runs in the first inning, more than enough to spot Krajniak who earned the win, allowing four hits and two earned runs in three innings.

In the second game, Arianne Chojnacki earned the win, allowing two hits and walking two with two strikeouts.

Krajniak was 3-for-4 with five RBI; Stone was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Roznowski was 2-for-3 with two doubles and five RBI. Silvia Piotto was 1-for-1 with a triple and three runs scored.

“When you play the schedule we played, getting a win is good no matter how it comes,” Posen coach Wayne Karsten said.

BASEBALL

Onaway topples Joburg in Ski Valley twinbill

ONAWAY–The Onaway baseball team won both games in a doubleheader on Thursday against Johannesburg- Lewiston. Onaway won the opener 3-0 and the nightcap 6-5.

In the opener, Trevor Wregglesworth pitched for Onaway, allowing no runs and striking out eleven. He was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, and a run scored; Lucas Tollini was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Onaway was down 5-3 in the nightcap until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the team scored three runs on two outs. Cody Nellis pitched for the Cardinals, striking out two.

Wregglesworth was 2-for-3 with two runs, a double, and a stolen base; Josiah Crawford was 2-for-2 with two runs, three stolen bases, and three RBI.

“It was really exciting to see the team come together, especially in the second game,” Onaway coach Mike Crull said.

Onaway (10-9-1, 9-5 Ski Valley Conference) plays in a tournament in Newberry on Saturday.

Alcona earns split with Oscoda

OSCODA–The Alcona baseball team split a North Star League doubleheader with Oscoda on Thursday, losing the first game 3-2 and winning the second game 14-1.

In the nightcap, Alex Stephenson earned the win for the Tigers (13-5). Matthew Krisan and Erik Davey each went 2-for-3 and Brock Franklin was 2-for-2.

In the opener, Franklin took the loss and Jake Gallagher was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Alcona.

Atlanta splits with Posen

ATLANTA–The Atlanta baseball team split a doubleheader against Posen on Thursday. Atlanta won the opener 16-1 and lost the nightcap 16-8.

Atlanta’s Austin Corbin pitched the opener. Reece Wood was 3-for-3 with three runs scored; Cody Reeves was 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, Hunter Reeves pitched for Atlanta. Wood was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

“We were holding it together; we came out strong,” Atlanta coach Lonny Kent said. “We just fell apart in the second game.”

Mark Wisniewski pitched for Posen, with nine strikeouts and two walks. Darren Dubie was 2-for-4 with an RBI; Avery Werth was 3-for-5 with two RBI; Jared Sharpe was 2-for-4 and Jared Kamyszek was 2-for-3.

“Mark pitched a gem of a game in the nightcap. It was a brilliant pitching performance and we had good defense behind him,” Posen coach Pat Kowalski said.

Atlanta (7-11) hosts Rogers City on Monday. Posen (10-10 overall, 4-6 North Star League, 3-1 Little Dipper Division) hosts Au Gres on Monday.

Alpena JV sweeps Grayling at home

The Alpena JV baseball team made quick work of Grayling on Thursday, topping the Vikings 17-0 (three innings) and 15-0.

Jordan Schultz earned the win for Alpena (12-2, 6-0 Big North) in the opener, walking two and striking out seven.

Alpena had 13 hits as a team and Owen Limback went 3-for-3. Colby Plowman, Kyle VanDusen and Clay Donajkowski each went 2-for-2.

Clay and Colin Donajkowski combined to walk one and strike out eight in the nightcap.

Riley Arlt was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples, Jack Schmanski was 3-for-3 and Plowman was 3-for-4 as Alpena collected 13 hits for the second straight game.

Alpena plays at Petoskey on Tuesday.

Tawas wins tri-meet at Oscoda

OSCODA–Tawas took top honors during a tri meet at Oscoda on Wednesday.

Tawas’ women’s team finished with 93 points, ahead of Alcona (44) and Oscoda (37). Tawas’ boys team finished with 88 points, ahead of Oscoda (66) and Alcona (17).
