Home runs power Alpena to wins

GAYLORD–Home runs powered the Alpena High softball team to a pair of wins over Gaylord on Tuesday.

Alpena won 13-1 in the opener and beat the Blue Devils 14-4 (five innings) in the second game.

Jasmyn Schultz and Jessica Marwede hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning to lead Alpena in the opener and Marwede had four hits.

Jade Schultz pitched four scoreless innings for Alpena (19-6, 6-0 Big North) to open the first game and Kady Gehrke took over in the fifth inning.

Emma Fraser and Lizzy Heath combined for the win in the nightcap and Jade Schultz and Mallory Kautz both hit home runs.

Alpena scored four runs each in the third and fourth innings and added six more in the fifth inning.

Alpena will play Garden City for one game at 5 p.m. on Friday and will host a home invitational on Saturday.

Hillman splits doubleheader

against Inland Lakes

INLAND LAKES — The Hillman softball team faced one of its toughest tests of the season on Tuesday as it traveled to take on Inland Lakes.

The Tigers split a doubleheader, losing the first game 7-2 and bounced back to win the second game 3-0.

Vanessa Schook started on the mound and got hit with the loss as she struck out batters.

The Tigers bats were held in check as Morgan Armon doubled in the contest to lead the Hillman offense.

Hillman responded in the nightcap, shutting out Inland Lakes.

Morgan Dove picked up the win striking out three.

Offensivley, Armon hit her third home run in four games and went 2-for-3. Schook doubled and Alison Samp, Dove and Lyndsey Ryba all chipped in with key hits.

Hillman now holds a 18-3 overall record and will do battle with Rogers City on Thursday.

Hillman sweeps Posen

POSEN — The Hillman softball team continued its dominant play on Monday sweeping Posen by scores of 25-2 and 19-0.

The Tigers got big offensive efforts from Morgan Armon who went 4-for-4 with a grand slam, Vanessa Schook was 4-for-5 with a double, Morgan Dove went 3-for-3 with a double, Lyndsey Ryba and Jozie Appelgren both went 3-for-4 and Olivia Smith was 2-for-4. Elizabeth Weiland, Autumn Jones and Ever LaFleche all added hits in the contest as well.

Schook picked up another win striking out nine batters and allowing just four hits.

Hillman coasted through the nightcap as the bats stayed hot.

Armon went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and a double. Dove was 4-for-4, Schook was 3-for-4 with a double. Andrea Tatutua and Appelgren both went 3-for-3 and LaFleche went 2-for-4.

Alpena JV wins big vs Gaylord

ALPENA–The Alpena High JV softball team won big against Gaylord at home on Tuesday, topping the Blue Devils 17-1 (3 inn) and 22-2 (3 innings).

In the opener, Lilly Lewis was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.

Ursula Duncan, Rachel Suszek and Kortney Dunn each had two hits and Kali Spomer had two doubles.

Spomer was the winning pitcher in the second game, allowing four hits and striking out two.

Riley Alexander was 3-for-4 with three triples, Dunn had a triple and Megan Roznowski was 2-for-3.

Alpena improves to 22-3 on the season and plays at Petoskey on Tuesday.

BASEBALL

Alpena splits BNC twinbill with Gaylord

GAYLORD–The Alpena baseball team split a doubleheader against Gaylord on Tuesday, winning the opener 3-1 and losing the nightcap 1-0.

In the opener, Alpena scored one run in the first inning on a sacrifice from Bailey Marquardt. Two more runs were scored in the third inning.

Lucas Crosby pitched four innings before Bruz Copping came in when the bases were loaded, allowing just one run to be scored. The pitchers combined allowed just five hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

The nightcap didn’t go as well for the Wildcats as they were shutout. Copping and Chandler Lance each had one hit for Alpena. Gaylord scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning.

Cam DeCaire pitched a complete game for Alpena with two strikeouts and no walks.

Tuesday’s games bring Alpena’s record to 4-2 in the Big North Conference and 12-8 overall.

Hillman splits with

Inland Lakes

INLAND LAKES — The Hillman baseball team earned a split on the road against Inland Lakes on Tuesday, winning game one by a score of 12-8 and falling in the nightcap 9-7.

Nash Steinke picked up the win in game one, pitching five innings, allowing four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six.

At the plate, Caine Hunt went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Jared Juergens was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Kyler Moir was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Jacob Morrison went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Came Koenig took the loss in the nightcap, pitching just two innings allowing three runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.

Offensively, Hunt led the way again going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

Hillman now holds a 17-5 overall record and is 10-0 in the North Star League play.

The Tigers will put their perfect league record on the line Thursday when they travel to Rogers City to take on the Hurons.

Alpena JV dominates Gaylord

ALPENA–The Alpena junior varsity baseball team dominated in a doubleheader against Gaylord on Tuesday, winning the opener 18-1 and the nightcap 13-3.

In the opener, Alpena led 12-1 at the end of the first inning. Eleven of the runs were scored after Alpena already had two outs.

Keegan Spomer was the winning pitcher in three innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Kyle VanDusen was 3-for-3 with a double; Jack Schmanski was 2-for-2; Hunter Canute was 2-for-2 with a double; Spomer was 3-for-3 with a double; Riley Arlt was 2-for-3 with a double and Colby Plowman had a double.

In the nightcap, Arlt was the winning pitcher with ten strikeouts and five walks.

Alpena had eight total hits as a team. Owen Limback was 2-for-3 with a double; Jordan Schultz was 2-for-4 and Alex Cosbitt was 2-for-3.

“We had a few nice catches,” Alpena junior varsity coach Dave Myers said. “Owen Limback had a nice catch from the right field in the first game and Alex Cosbitt had a nice run and grab in the second.”

Alpena (10-2, 6-0 Big North) hosts Grayling on Thursday starting at 4 p.m.

Hale wins Hillman quad

HILLMAN–The Hale boys and girls track teams took top honors at a quad in Hillman on Tuesday.

Hale’s boys team finished with 104 points, ahead of Hillman (70), Posen (48) and Mio (5).

Hale’s girls team finished with 69 points, ahead of Hillman (42), Posen (41) and Mio (21).

BOYS GOLF

Apsey leads Alcona

in Gaylord

GAYLORD–The Alcona golf team had a tournament at the Loon in Gaylord Saturday. The Tigers were lead by Hunter Apsey’s 94, which earned him eighth place honors for the tournament.

The team travels to West Branch to play the Dream on Thursday.
