Home runs lead Wildcats past Trojans

TRAVERSE CITY–Spurred on by six home runs by five different players, the Alpena High softball team swept Traverse City Central on Tuesday, winning 9-1 and 14-1.

The wins give the Wildcats (29-7) a perfect 10-0 record in Big North Conference play and clinched another conference crown for Alpena

Jade Schultz and Emma Fraser combined to pitch Alpena to a win in the opener.

In the first inning, Liz Kendziorski led off with a single, stole second and third and scored on an RBI single by Jessica Marwede and Alpena was off and running from there.

Marwede had a solo home run in the third inning and Fraser had a two-run shot in the fifth inning.

Schultz earned the win in the nightcap and had a pair of home runs in the win.

Kendziorski led off the game with a triple and was later scored by Fraser.

The Trojans hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, but from there the game belonged to Alpena.

In addition to Schultz two run home run in the second inning, Alpena also got a solo shot from Jasmyn Schultz

Alpena added five more runs in the fifth inning, which included home runs by Jade Schultz and Lizzy Heath.

Alpena JV caps off solid season

The Alpena JV softball team capped off a stellar season with a doubleheader sweep of Traverse City Central on Tuesday, beating the Trojans by scores of 5-2 and 13-3.

Lilly Lewis earned the win in game one, tossing a complete game, allowing just two hits and striking out six.

Offensively, Alpena was led by Jaime Modrzynski, Ursula Duncan, Aubree Sheldon, Riley Alexander and Natalie Jaskolski each had a hit it the game. Modrzynski and Duncan each doubled and Sheldon tripled.

The Wildcats ended the season with a lopsided win in the nightcap, needing just five innings to defeat the Trojans.

Lewis picked up her second win of the night as she pitched all five innings and allowed three hits and struck out five.

At the plate, Maddy Saddler was a home run short of the cycle as she collected three hits. Megan Roznowski had a double and Kali Spomer and Rachel Suszek each added a hit.

Alpena finishes the season with a 30-3 overall record as they went out in style for head coach Amy Timm who will be leaving after 11 seasons coaching the Wildcats JV team.

“Out of my 11 years, this was our best season. It was a special group that came together as a team, played great together and played a lot of ball throughout the season,” Timm said. “I’m emotional and speechless. I’ve had a blast coaching. The girls do what they do, they play the game and we as coaches do what we can to help. I’m going to miss it because it’s really been a blessing. I owe a huge thanks to varsity coach Paul Marwede for giving me the opportunity to coach and allowing me to be a part of something special.”

Alpena rallies to defeat Trojans

TRAVERSE CITY–Cam Cosbitt hit an RBI double and Cam DeCaire followed with a single to drive in the winning run as the Alpena baseball team defeated Traverse City Central 8-7 on Tuesday.

Alpena (17-10, 7-2 Big North) led 6-3 after six innings, but the Trojans rallied back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-6 lead.

Cosbitt hit an RBI double to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning and DeCaire followed with a single to give Alpena the win.

“The kids played well. We got behind, but we came back and the kids showed a lot of character,” Alpena coach Phil Schultz said.

Bruz Copping earned the win for Alpena and Aidan Goike had two hits.

The win allowed Alpena to stay in the race for the Big North title, at least temporarily. Traverse City West clinched the Big North title outright on Tuesday with 11-0 and 7-4 wins over Gaylord.

The second game was stopped in the third inning due to rain with Alpena leading 5-1.

DeCaire pitched for Alpena and Cosbitt and Chandler Lantz each had two hits.

season with sweep of Trojans

The Alpena JV baseball team clinched at least a share of the Big North Conference title at the JV level as they swept rival Traverse City Central on Tuesday by scores of 4-3 and 6-5.

“It was two hard fought games, but when push came to shove, we were able to lock down and came through in the end,” Alpena coach Dave Myers said.

The Wildcats put together a come from behind victory in game one as they trailed 3-1 after four innings. Alpena scored three ing the fifth to take a one run lead and were able to hang on.

Keegan Spomer picked up the win, tossing six innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three.

Jordan Schultz came in to pitch the final inning to pick up the save.

Alpena was limited to just five hits from from different players with only one extra base hit coming off the bat of Jack Schmanski.

The Wildcats go out to a 6-1 lead in the nightcap before Traverse City scored four in the sixth, but again Schultz came in to pitch the final 1 2/3 innings and didn’t allow a hit and struck out two to record his second save of the night.

Riley Arlt started going the first 5 1/2 innings and allowed four hits, three walks and struck out nine.

At the plate, Alpena was led by Kyle VanDusen and Owen Limback who each went 2-for-4. Schmanski was 2-for-2 and Spomer added a single.

The Wildcats finish the year with a 17-5 overall record and 9-1 record in the BNC.

“We feel like we have a lot of momentum throughout our baseball program. We have a lot of good athletes coming through the program and it’s extremely competitive which makes everyone better,” Myers said.
