Hillman gets back on track with win over Posen in baseball twinbill

POSEN–The Hillman baseball team won both games in a doubleheader against Posen on Monday. The Tigers won the opener 9-3 and the nightcap 13-1.

Kyler Moir pitched for Hillman in the opener, with three runs on two hits and eight strikeouts. Caine Hunt was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI; Izac Thompson was 1-for-2 with one run scored and two RBI; Gage Steinke was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI; Matt Steinke was 2-for-3 with two runs.

In the nightcap, Jared Juergens pitched 4 2/3 innings, with one run on two hits and struck out seven. Juergens was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI; Matt Steinke was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI; Jacob Cordes was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

“I’m very proud of the guys and the way they played tonight,” Hillman coach Rick Firman said. “We had some internal issues and it was inspiring for the guys to come out and play two solid games of ball.”

Hillman (16-4, 10-0 North Star League) hosts Inland Lakes on Tuesday.

Atlanta loses 2 to Hale

HALE–The Atlanta baseball team lost both games in a doubleheader against Hale on Thursday. The Huskies lost the opener 10-6 and the nightcap 9-8.

In the opener, Atlanta’s Austin Corbin was 4-for-5 and Reece Wood was 3-for-4.

In the nightcap, Brett DeRocher was 3-for-3 with four RBI for Atlanta.

“Both games were close, they just wanted it more than we did,” Atlanta baseball coach Lonny Kent said.

Atlanta (6-10) hosts Posen on Thursday.

SOFTBALL

Onaway stays perfect in conference play

CENTRAL LAKE–The Onaway softball team dominated in a doubleheader against Central Lake on Monday. Onaway won the opener 17-2 and the nightcap 7-3.

In the opener, Calley Selke pitched all six innings, allowing just three hits and strking out nine.

Selke was 2-for-4 with four runs scored, a double and an RBI; Kayla Metty was 2-for-5 with two runs scored; Kennedy Crawford was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI; Maddie McLean was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI; Taylor Ehrke was 1-for-3 with one run scored; Brittany Buczkowski was 4-for-5 with one run scored, one triple and six RBI; Jenna Larson was 2-for-4 with a home run and Daria Domke was 1-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Crawford pitched all six innings, allowing six hits and striking out three girls.

Selke was 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored; Metty was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored; Crawford was 1-for-2 with a double, three RBI and one run scored; Mc Lean was 2-for-3 with a two run home run; Buczkowski was 1-for-3; Domke was 1-for-3 with one run scored and Zebany Box was 1-for-3 with one run scored.

“We had really good defense,” Onaway coach Jodi Brewbaker said. “The girls responded well after Saturday’s loss.”

Onaway (18-3, 12-0 Ski Valley) hosts Johannesburg-Lewiston on Thursday.

Hillman pounds Posen

POSEN–The Posen softball team took a pair of tough losses against Hillman on Monday. Posen lost the opener 25-2 and the nightcap 19-0.

Hillman led 6-2 after five innings and broke the game open further with 19 additional runs in the sixth inning. Posen’s Riley Krajniak was 2-for-4 with an RBI; Brooke Ciarkowski was 1-for-3; Taylor Roznowski was 1-for-3.

In the nightcap, Roznowski was 1-for-1 with a double.

Posen is 8-11 overall and 2-6 in the Ski Valley League.

Atlanta drops twinbill to Hale

HALE–The Atlanta softball team took a tough pair of losses against Hale on Monday, losing the opener 25-4 and the nightcap 24-7.

Atlanta’s Cherokee Cunningham and Justice Cahoon both had a single in each game.

“We’re not playing to our full potential,” Atlanta softball coach Lisa Marlatt said. “We’re a better team than what we’re playing as.”

Atlanta hosts Posen on Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Alpena takes second at Birch Run tournament

BIRCH RUN — The Alpena girls soccer team showed signs of improvement on Saturday as the team took second place in a tournament at Birch Run.

The Wildcats began the day with a 1-0 win over Saginaw Valley Lutheran. Anna Young scored the game’s only goal on an assist from Erin Bailey.

Goaltender Maren Winter was again solid in net earning the shutout.

Alpena earned a spot in the championship game by defeating Gladwin in the second game of the day.

The Wildcats got goals from Mollie Girard, Kourtney Jones and Young.

Alpena eventually fell in the championship game, losing a 1-0 heartbreaker to the host Birch Run as they scored with eight minutes left in the game.

Despite finishing runner-up, Alpena had four players named to the All-Tournament team as Young, Jones, Madyson Girard and Emma Kelly all made the All-Tournament team.

“I told the girls it was a good day and it was just short of being a great day,” Alpena coach Tim Storch said. “It was definitely a step in the right direction and it was an improvement from last year when we finished third at this same tournament. I’m proud of the girls.”

The Wildcats hold a 6-5-1 overall record and will resume Big North Conference play today as they host Petoskey.

Cardinals win Fairview Invite

FAIRVIEW–The Johannesburg-Lewiston track teams took top honors at the Fairview Invitational on Friday.

The Joburg girls team finished with 205 points, ahead of Fairview (119), Alcona (91), Onaway (57) and Rogers City (44). Oscoda finished with 30 points, Hillman had 22, Posen had 16 and Mio had nine.

The Joburg boys team finished with 152 points, ahead of Hale (124), Oscoda (73 1/2); Fairview (59.33) and Hillman (55.33). Onaway had 45.33 points, Alcona had 44 1/2 points, Rogers City had 24 points, Mio had 11 points and Posen had five.
