ACC softball team swept in weekend series at Mott

FLINT — After dropping two games on Friday on the road against Mott Community College, the Lumberjacks of Alpena Community College were back in action on Saturday, but again fell short in two games, including a heartbreaking finish to the weekend as they lost by scores of 8-0 and 4-3.

The Lumberjacks struggled hitting once again in game one as Alpena was held to just three hits as Kelsey Huffman to the loss.

In the nightcap, Alpena was down 3-0 in the fourth inning, but eventually found a way to string some hits together as Jenna Hincka doubled, Ashley Meyers and Taylor Siersma singled during the fifth inning. Hincka and Meyers both came around to score in the inning and Alexa Quaine later tied the game as she ripped a double of her own to score Monica Bartz who reached on an error earlier in the inning.

The two teams were tied at three going into the sixth inning, but Mott got some runners on base in the home half of the seventh inning and eventually got the winning run to cross home plate on a walkoff base hit to escape with another victory over the Lumberjacks.

“The second game was a very good one. I was extremely proud of the way the girls battled back after being down late in the game and never quit,” Alpena coach Shelley Hance said.

With the losses, ACC falls to 1-16 overall on the year and 1-8 in conference play. The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Delta Community College for a makeup game that was postponed earlier in the year.

Alpena will wrap up its road schedule tomorrow against the Pioneers and will play the remaining 12 regular season games at home.
