ACC softball team earns first conference win

PORT HURON — After having several conference games postponed, the Alpena Community College softball team was able to get back on the field this weekend.

The Lumberjacks earned their first conference win of the season after splitting a doubleheader with St. Clair Community College on Saturday.

Alpena dropped game one 8-0. The Lumberjacks were unable to get much going with the bats and were held to just two hits as Alexa Quaine and Kayla Lenard had the two hits for Alpena.

ACC bounced back in game two behind a strong pitching performance from Kendra Cole who pick up the victory pitching a complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out three.

The Lumberjacks defense played a huge role in the win as Lenard made two incredible plays in the center field and Ashley Meyers play solid defensively at third base to limit St. Clair.

Offensivley, Lenard had two hits including a double to lead the Lumberjacks. Quaine, Meyers, Monica Bartz and Taylor Siersma all collected one hit apiece in the win. Lenard scored two runs and Bartz and Siersma scored a run apiece.

Alpena returned to action on Sunday, but dropped both games of the doubleheader, losing game one 9-0 and coming up just short in the nightcap, falling by a final score of 6-5.

The Lumberjacks struggled hitting in game one as Lenard got the lone hit in the defeat.

In game two, Alpena handled the bats much better as Jenna Hincka went 3-for-4 and Lenard and Meyers each had two hits. Quaine and Kelsey Huffman also added a hit apiece in the losing effort.

ACC now stands at 1-4 in conference play and will look to improve its record when the Lumberjacks travel to Mott for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
