Hillman clinches share of NSL title

HILLMAN–The Hillman boys basketball team earned its share of a North Star League title for the fourth consecutive year with a 68-59 victory against Rogers City on Friday.

The two teams were tied after the first quarter 19-19 and Rogers City gained the lead by halftime 21-23. Hillman fought back in the third, holding a lead of just one point, 50-49 after 24 minutes.

Rogers City’s Phil Grambau scored twenty points in the first half, including six three pointers. Brendan Koss joined him on the scoreboard, scoring 16 points for his team.

Hillman made 24 of its 31 free throws for the game and Gunnar Libby made seven of eight in the fourth quarter.

Hillman’s leading scorers were Brandon Banks with 15 points, Libby with 14 points, and Kory Henigan with 14 points and ten rebounds.

“Rogers City came out and shot the lights out, with nine three pointers in the first half. They matched us point for point and executed against our defense,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. “We nestled a little bit in the third quarter. There was a very small margin of error.”

Hillman (15-0, 11-0 North Star League) plays in Fairview on Tuesday.

Onaway 73,

Mancelona 34

MANCELONA–The Onaway boys basketball team dominated in a game against Mancelona on Friday winning 73-34.

Onaway got the lead early on in the game with a score of 28-4 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, Onaway was up 39-10. In the third quarter, the Cardinals extended their lead to 51-24.

Onaway’s Keaton Brewer led the effort, scoring 22 points in the first quarter and 36 overall. Cody Cruise scored 13 points and Trevor Wregglesworth had eight assists for the game.

“We came out with a point to prove. We faced a bad loss last time and it was our goal to keep them under forty points. We were very aggressive,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “Keaton did what he did all year, and Trevor distributed the ball well so the boys could score. Overall we played very well.”

Onaway (8-8) hosts Rogers City on Monday.

Hale 62, Atlanta 48

ATLANTA–The Atlanta boys basketball team lost Hale on Friday, 62-48.

Hale was up 21-8 after the first quarter, but Atlanta was able to fight back in the second and tie the score 23-23 at halftime. In the third quarter, Hale came back and upping its lead to 47-32.

“Last time we were blown out by more than forty points. Tonight was better basketball than we’ve been playing all season and better defense especially in the second quarter,” Atlanta coach Kevin Haren said. “We got into some foul trouble in the second quarter and Hale took advantage of that.”

The leading scorers for Atlanta were Austin Corbin with 19 points and Nick Byarski with 17 points.

Atlanta (3-13) hosts Harbor Light Christian Academy on Thursday.

BASKETBALL

Hale 68, Atlanta 15

ATLANTA–The Atlanta girls basketball team faced a tough loss against Hale on Friday 68-15.

After the first quarter, Atlanta was down 20-3. At the half, Altanta trailed 42-9. By the end of the third quarter, Atlanta trailed 56-13.

Hale’s leading scorer was Olivia Rasch with 22 points.

Atlanta’s leading scorer was Tiffany Juergens with eight points.

“The girls did a better job of limiting their shots to one attempt. If they threw up a shot, they didn’t have the opportunity to shoot again,” Atlanta coach Melony Haskin said.

Atlanta hosts Harbor Light Christian Academy on Tuesday.
