Wildcats struggle late in loss to Trojans

TRAVERSE CITY — The Alpena basketball team was on the receiving end of a 56-40 Big North Conference defeat to the rival Traverse City Central Trojans on Tuesday night.

“We started off decent in the first quarter, but after that we struggled on the offensive end and let down defensively,” Alpena coach John Pintar said.

Chris Derocher led the Wildcats with 17 points and Cam DeCaire added 10 points.

“We just didn’t give the effort we need to in order to win tonight and we lost a game that we should have been a lot better in,” Pintar said.

The Alpena JV team also lost 55-42 to Traverse City.

Haydn Goebel led the Wildcats scoring 16 points.

The Alpena freshman team was victorious, winning by a score of 66-40.

The Wildcats were led by Kelly Stark who scored 10 points and both Caleb Zaborney and Jaydan Duncan had nine points apiece in the win.

Forest Area 78,

Onaway 73 2OT

FIFE LAKE– The Onaway boys basketball team came up on the short end of double overtime thriller on Tuesday night, falling to Forest Area by a final score of 78-73.

The two teams were tied at the end of the second quarter, regulation and eventually needed a second overtime to settle the score.

“It was our game to win and we let on get away tonight,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “It was a great game, but we just have to learn how to close out games like that and I think we will learn a lot from tonight and I like where this team is headed.”

Keaton Brewer led the Cardinals pouring in 38 points on the night. Trevor Wregglesworth added 11 points and John Bay added nine points in the losing effort.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Rogers City 50, Onaway 30

ONAWAY–Taylor Fleming recorded a double-double and the Rogers City girls basketball team improved to 6-0 with a win over Onaway on Monday, topping the Cardinals 50-30.

Fleming scored 14 points and added 11 rebounds. Kayla Rabeau added 18 for the Hurons.

WRESTLING

Onaway wrestlers place in Ionia

IONIA–The Onaway wrestling team had several grapplers place during a recent meet in Ionia.

Teddy Peters (130) finished fourth with a 3-2 record. In the third place match, Peters was pinned by Fruitport’s Christian Straley in 4:42. Peters won his first three matches by pin, before losing to Portland’s Desmond Gardner in the fourth round.

Cody Ionetz (145) lost by decision 7-4 to Delton Kellogg’s Trent Aukerman. In the first four rounds, Ionetz won two matches by pin and another by fall and lost another match by pin.

Gavin Fenstermaker (152) finished fifth after pinning Lansing Eastern’s Amadi Pulliam in 1:41. After two byes, Fenstermaker went 1-2 in his next three matches.

Troy Klein (160) also finished fifth with a win over Fowler’s Victor Felpausch by pin in 3:44. Klein gained an early win by pin before losing his next two matches by decision.

“Overall I was happy with their performance. They wrestled tough all day and stepped up their physicality which was good to see,” Onaway coach Mark Grant said. “I thought that Coty had a particularly good day as he continues to push himself through all three periods. His last match was a real slugfest and although he lost he did it the right way wrestling extremely hard, I thought it was his best match.”

Onaway returns to action in New Lothrup on Saturday.
