Vote no on Alpena County’s tax hike proposal

I am a nonpartisan candidate for county commissioner District 1. Having been at the airport my entire life I write to you with a heavy heart about the current county management and its finances. Most are aware that the county airport has a large runway. Most are aware the runway is large because of the military, not civilian, needs. The military is a tenant. The military has paid nothing to Alpena for the use of the land. Nothing! Dear Editor — In 1903, Bonney and Smith created the first safe and affordable wax crayons for schools. The first box of eight sold for a nickel and included red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, and black. The company added new colors, many of which children were involved in creating by way of contests to name a new color. Today there are 120 colors in the Crayola color wheel. Snow, Fisher are only viable APS candidates

The Northeast Michigan League of Conservative Education is a political action committee supporting three candidates for school board. If all are elected, there would be three board members who want to control the public schools, two while sending their school-age children to private schools and an existing member that is homeschooling. NMLCE advocates vouchers, charter schools, and homeschooling. They would control the board. Disappointed that the DNR killed Roger the elk

I was never so disappointed in learning our Michigan Department of Natural Resources killed the elk roaming around Rogers City. They could have waited a week or two and it probably would have left on its own, like it did last year. Go on the internet and you can find numerous incidents of elk visiting neighborhoods near our national parks. Some bull elk have reached legendary status. We are talking about one elk who gave great joy and excitement to numerous people who viewed “ROGER.” A unique situation which will never be visited again. I guess we can all sleep better now ...

Vote for Snow, Fisher in school board election

It goes without saying that the Nov. 5 school board election is extremely important. We should be looking for candidates who are dedicated to the public school system here in Alpena. Gordon Snow has proven his commitment to the youth of Alpena many times over. You will not only find him attending school board meetings, but also at concerts, pep rallies, assemblies, and any activities involving students. DNR should have moved elk instead of killing

In response to your article that appeared in the Oct. 17 edition of the paper. The taking of a perfectly healthy animal by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The elk had been coming to Rogers City since last fall. Without any incidents during that time period. They had an available option at their disposal, which was to tranquilize the animal and transport it to the viewing area in Gaylord, where it certainly could have been safe and lived out the rest of its life in peace.
