NEMCSA Head Start effectively managed, trusted
I was disheartened to read the recent article, “Programs at Head Start negligent, mismanaged,” in The Alpena News. While the GAO report raises serious concerns about interim-managed Head Start programs, it is unfair and misleading to paint all Head Start programs with the same broad brush — especially those run by longstanding and trusted grantees like Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency (NEMCSA).
As a former teacher and principal in Northeast Michigan, I saw firsthand how NEMCSA’s well-run Head Start program gave children a strong academic foundation and essential social skills. Students entered kindergarten familiar with routines, giving them a crucial advantage for success in their K-12 journey. Believing in NEMCSA’s impact, I now serve as a board member to support its vital program.
What’s most upsetting about this article is the harm it does to public trust in programs that work. Many families here in Northeast Michigan have seen the difference Head Start makes. These differences cannot and should not be overlooked.
The GAO report was focused on interim management programs–temporary arrangements for grantees that lost funding. These programs are not representative of the consistent, transparent, and impactful work we do at NEMCSA.
Publishing such a broad critique without this context does a disservice to the hardworking staff, parents, and children who make Head Start a success, especially in our region. Head Start is about opportunity and resilience, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to helping families build brighter futures.
