News must do better at choosing cartoons

As I was scrolling through Saturday’s paper, I was dismayed to see that the paper selected another cartoon ridiculing the Department of the Interior’s move to rename existing geographic features with derogatory names to names that better reflect those locations’ history or environment. Perhaps it is time Mr. Roorda and members of the editorial staff acknowledge the place of privilege from where they speak, maybe if they had to drive past a lake or river named for a racist slur attributed to their ethnicity or attended a school named for a historical figure that oppressed or brutalized their ancestors, they might think a little more on their glib commentary. The outcry and public reactions to this name change are embarrassing. and as a media outlet that is supposed to inform and educate, Alpena News should do better when choosing its cartoon subject matters instead of perpetuating outdated ideas and ways of thinking.
