Attack on newspaper’s credibility misinformed

A recent letter to the editor indicates that there are citizens who are unaware of Ambassador Gordon Sondland’s statement on Nov. 20, in the impeachment hearings: “Was there a ‘quid pro quo’? The answer is yes.”

Granted, this answer, given under oath, is not the same as his previous statement (not under oath and based on the president’s statement just after the whistleblower revelation).

Surprising how sworn testimony, under threat of perjury charges, can refresh and clarify the memory. The ensuing attack on the newspaper’s accurate report is unjustified and misinformed. Support of vigorous investigation and reporting by the news media is an important bulwark against erosion of our democracy.
