County commissioners don’t speak for me

Alcona County faces many challenges. Yet, county Commissioners Craig Johnston (chair), Daniel Gauthier, Carolyn Brummund, Adam Brege, and Gary Wnuk thought it important to use their official time to pass a toothless resolution opposing Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order prohibiting discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in state services or by state contractors or grant recipients. Whitmer’s order replaced a narrower order that Gov. Rick Snyder issued days before leaving office.

Despite being a taxpayer paying the commissioners’ salaries, they do not speak for me! Their unanimous resolution goes against my personal, political and religious beliefs. I was taught at an early age by my parents and my church that, under the eyes of God and laws of man, that all men are created equal. Apparently, the Alcona County commissioners had a different upbringing. And, sadly, they are a poor example of “leadership” to our youth. Their narrow-minded, homophobic political agenda only brings embarrassment and shame to themselves, their families, and to Alcona County and its residents.

The Alcona County Board of Commissioners should be condemned for their actions. There is no place in any part of our government for discrimination against its citizens. Shame on them.
