News endorses John James for U.S. Senate

The Alpena News endorses John James for U.S. Senate.

We believe that government runs best when there is a balance of power between the various branches.

As we see this election, there seems little evidence to assume the U.S. House will change leadership, thus we believe it is important for the GOP to remain in control of the Senate. That balance between the two, while frustrating at times, seems to generally work best at eventually getting things accomplished.

The GOP majority in the Senate seems tenuous, at best. There are important Senate races across the country — including here in Michigan.

James has proven to be a viable candidate who knows the issues, having fared strongly against Sen. Debbie Stabenow in the 2018 Senate race. Using that experience as a foundation, he is hoping to upset incumbent Gary Peters.

Certainly, James has his work cut out, but we believe he can put together a strong showing and would be a solid senator.

We also believe having two senators of different parties also would be a good balance for Michigan. The last time that occurred was in 2001, when Spencer Abraham was the GOP senator with Carl Levin, a Democrat.

We appreciate checks and balances in government. For that reason, consider a vote for James on the ballot Nov. 3.
