Glad Tunnel to Towers became NE Michigan tradition

This community recognizes and appreciates the sacrifices our men and women in uniform have made and continue to make on our behalf.

That’s why it’s no surprise to see the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K race become an Alpena tradition.

The race, now in its fourth year in Alpena, raises money to build smart homes for injured veterans. Alpena can claim the first smart home in Michigan, which uses technology to enable injured veterans to live a life that they couldn’t live before the injuries.

“It’s an honor to run this race,” participant Rich McDonald told sports reporter Jonny Zawacki at this year’s race on Saturday. “It’s for something special. I have a lot of respect for the firefighters running in their gear. I appreciate what this event stands for and that everyone is willing to show support. It’s great to see so many people participate.”

Well said.

Here’s hoping the race becomes as longstanding and much-adored a tradition as Christmas cookies.

Our vets deserve it.
