Observe 9/11 by giving the gift of life

As we observe the 15th anniversary Sunday of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, we’re reminded that many residents choose this time of year to participate in a public service or perform an act of kindness as their personal way to honor the victims and heroes from that day.

This year the charitable engagement that will occur across the U.S. in the days ahead is expected to be the largest ever. While there are many different opportunities for residents to participate, one way that seems very appropriate is to donate blood to the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross shares that every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, so regular donations are essential.

Donna M. Morrissey, director of national partnerships, Red Cross Biomedical Services, said “giving the gift of life to someone else is a way to continue the healing process in the face of tragic circumstances most Americans couldn’t imagine before that day.”

Locally area residents will have two opportunities to participate in the week ahead. On Monday a blood drive will be conducted in Rogers City at the senior center while on Wednesday the Alpena Rotary Club is sponsoring a drive at the First Presbyterian Church. The times for both drives is 12-5:45 p.m.

Our hope would be that this year all of us would choose an appropriate and meaningful way to observe this anniversary. By joining together in service to others, imagine what a powerful statement we could deliver to the rest of the world.
