ALPENA — Dr. Mary Morris joins Alpena Public Schools (APS) as the new Director of Specialized Instruction for the 2026/2027 school year, according to an APS press release.

APS stated that Morris earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Saginaw Valley State University and was awarded her doctorate in 2024 from Central Michigan University.

“I am looking forward to beginning in a new role with Alpena Public Schools supporting students, staff, and families within the district and community,” Morris said in the release. “Throughout my career in education, I have had the opportunity to serve students across grades K-12 in special education settings.”

According to APS, Morris’ experience includes time as a Teacher Consultant Technical Assistance Provider supporting educators and school systems and administrative experience as both a middle school and high school principal.

“It has strengthened my commitment to building positive school cultures, supporting student success, and fostering meaningful relationships with staff and families,” she added. “I am grateful for this opportunity and eager to begin building strong relationships throughout Alpena Public Schools.”

In her personal time, Morris enjoys long-distance running, reading, and spending time with family.

The Director of Specialized Instruction provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for district-wide student support services, including Special Education, Section 504, and Tier 2/3 Interventions, according to APS. This role serves as a critical bridge between building-level needs and central office administration while managing the day-to-day operations of specialized instruction to ensure equitable access, legal compliance, and improved student outcomes.
