Karen Neville

Karen S. (Torsch) Neville of Chelsea, Michigan (formerly of Alpena, Michigan and Newark, Ohio) passed away on September 3, 2025 at age 76, from ovarian cancer. She spent her final days at her son’s home in Chelsea, with her children by her side.

Karen was born on November 3, 1948 in Alpena, Michigan, to parents Nephi W. Torsch and Mildred “Millie” A. (Howell) Olson. After graduating from Alpena High School and attending Eastern Michigan University, Karen entered the medical field where she spent many years in the Ann Arbor and Chelsea area as a Cardio Pulmonary and EEG Technician, as well as in other caregiver roles, including raising two children. Later in life, she worked at a portrait photography studio, a job that helped fulfill her artistic aspirations.

Karen enjoyed all kinds of creative hobbies throughout her life, including sewing and quilting, photography, gardening, reading, drawing and architecture. She designed and helped oversee the construction of her family’s home in Grass Lake, a project she was especially proud of. She adored animals both wild and domestic, and had a penchant for rescuing random creatures in need, including dogs, cats, birds, and humans. She will be remembered for her stubborn, generous, loving and kind spirit, strong faith in God, and lifelong love of learning.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her children Aaron Tanner and Angela Tanner (David Tow); sisters Ann (John) Kunath and Pamela Schubert; and step-siblings Rod Olson and Jeanne (Tom) Standen. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Arbor Hospice. Karen often referred to her hospice caregivers as angels swarming around her and said she is looking forward to her next great adventure.
