Theodore Johnson

Born October 26, 1943, and raised in Pontiac, Michigan, Ted’s life was one of extraordinary service. Before settling in Alpena, he embarked on a remarkable journey as one of the first United States Peace Corps volunteers, serving as a teacher in Malawi from 1965 to 1968. This formative experience instilled in him a lifelong commitment to public service.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University and his Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law, Ted moved to Alpena in 1971. He began his legal career in private practice before being elected as the Alpena County Prosecuting Attorney in 1976, where he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to justice.

In 1983, Ted became the 88th District Court Judge, a position he held with unwavering integrity and wisdom until his retirement in 2015. As the Honorable Theodore O. Johnson, he was known for his fair and compassionate approach. A forward-thinking jurist, he was instrumental in establishing Alpena County’s Adult Drug Court; a program reflecting his belief in rehabilitation which continues to have a positive impact on the lives of countless people in the community. However, Ted’s work ethic and his passion for the law meant that retirement was never really an option, and he continued to work in private practice at the law firm of Isackson, Wallace & Pfeifer for the last 10 years.

Ted also was a talented musician, playing multiple instruments growing up including the piano and saxophone. For over 40 years he directed the Huron Shores Barbershop Chorus and also shared his talent as the lead singer in several quartets, including the aptly named Chord Order.

Many will also fondly remember him as a familiar, friendly face around town–a “celebrity dog walker” of sorts, often found enjoying a walk with his faithful sidekick, George Washington.

He is preceded in death by his parents Odin and Fern (Farrand) Johnson and sister, Kay Harris.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Mayor of Alpena Cindy Johnson and his five children: Scott Johnson (Billie) of Alpena, Michigan; David Prieur; Ryan Johnson (Cindy) of Addison Township, Michigan; Casey Johnson (Heather Kozar) of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and his daughter, Alex Johnson of New York, New York. He was also a cherished grandfather to: Rob, Faith, Hayley, Zach, and Hilary.

As an extremely practical person Ted would have asked that in lieu of flowers you consider a donation to make a lasting impact on the animals and children of the community. On behalf of his 4-legged walking companion, George, a donation to the Huron Humane Society would be welcomed, and as a dedication to the more than 40 years he served on the board, a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena would also be a meaningful tribute.

Family and friends may gather on July 11th at the 88th District Courtroom from 2 PM until time of colleague sharing at 4 PM, continuing Saturday July 12th at the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena from 12 PM until “Ted Talks” at 3 PM. Cremation arrangements are handled by Bannan Funeral Home.
