ALPENA –On New Year’s Eve, an Alpena Township Fire Department firefighter was struck by a passing vehicle, after being dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on US 23 North.
Fortunately, the firefighter was only struck by the side mirror of the vehicle and did not sustain serious injuries, but did throw him down to the ground.
The incident serves as an important reminder to all drivers that Michigan law requires motorists to slow down and yield when approaching first responders and vehicle recovery operators.
In a press release, Alpena Township Fire Chief emphasized the importance of driver awareness and making sure first responders have the room they need to attend to the scene they are working.
“Our firefighters put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect this community.,” Baker said in the press release. “When drivers fail to slow down and move over, they put lives at risk. Please remember–it’s not just the law; it’s about keeping everyone safe.”
This incident occurred just days after the Fire Chief of Hamilton Township Fire Department was struck and killed by a motorist.
With winter driving conditions increasing hazards on the road, it is critical for drivers to remain alert and exercise caution near emergency scenes. It is just so important for drivers to slow down and move as far over as possible to allow room for first responders.
